If we are to understand what Jesus did at the cross and how this established the Kingdom of God's sons we must understand the new covenant and how it differs from the old. Jesus is not a clever God-way of enabling people to do well what before the cross they had done poorly.

In Jesus, Father established a completely
new and living way. That 'way' depends not on man and his success in conforming to some stricture or pattern. It does not depend on man carrying out his part of an agreement because man cannot be relied on to carry our his part of the bargain. Father made a way of ensuring that our well being and destiny relied not on our performance but on His - on the performance of His Son.

Father gifted us with His Son. He made an agreement with Himself that can never be broken. He would be our righteousness and our life. Our salvation and our sonship would be in Jesus.

In his small book entitled,
Praise, Worship and The Presence of God, Stephen Crosby cites the woman at the well and Jesus' remark to her that 'true worshipers, worship God in spirit and in truth. He observes,

'Jesus is establishing something in the beginning of His thought
and response to the woman. He contrasts God's spiritual essence to
the externalities of cities, mountains, methods, and ministries more
broadly, all externalities. Christ establishes an essence and realm of
God. He is spirit in essence: He is other: The realm of His existence,
the plane on which He will be engaged in His Person, is not defined by
temporal externalities.' It is defined by spirit.

'I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist' 2 John 1.7 NIV.

Life flows from Jesus. Spirit life flows from Jesus and His place in the Father. It is defined as Jesus declared in another place in 'Spirit' as opposed to flesh and the realm of externalities. In the new covenant age the flesh and all the externalities that come under that heading accomplish nothing. Spirit and life is found in Jesus alone. Christ in you is Spirit. You conformed to the life of Christ is truth. All the 'externalities' mentioned above are shadows of the real. But the reality is Christ. The reality of the new creation among us is the Spirit of Sonship manifest in you and in those in whom Christ is life.

There's nothing you have to do to make this happen. It simply is. Only believe. The gift of God is eternal life. The worship of God is revealed as His life through you from day to day. Worship is more than forty minutes before the sermon. It's much more than you at church. It's Christ being our life in spirit and in truth. In this new and living way the Spirit has come in the flesh to transform society and the world.

'Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day - things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ' Col 2.16,17 NIV.
